About The Event
WHAT HAPPENED TO RIVERBEND?
Released in 1989, Riverbend tells the story of three Black Vietnam soldiers on the run from military police who find refuge in a small Southern town — only to discover the community is being terrorized by a violent, racist sheriff. When the townspeople enlist their help, the soldiers teach them how to stand up to their oppressors. Independently produced in direct response to films like Mississippi Burning, which told stories of Black struggle through the lens of white heroes, Riverbend was a bold, unapologetic act of cinematic resistance. Its message of self-determination and collective power still hits home today.
Attendees will have an opportunity to support the restoration by purchasing limited-edition event posters and pledging to our Kickstarter campaign.
