About The Event

About the book:

Published in 1994, Let the Circle Be Unbroken examines the African conception of the  relationship between spirit and matter. Marimba Ani explains that, for  African people, spirit and matter have a symbiotic relationship which  must be acknowledged in our political action and organizing as African  people.

Dr. Marimba Ani is an anthropologist and African studies scholar who’s best known for her book Yurugu: An African-Centered Critique of European Cultural Thought and Behavior.  She received her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Chicago and her  Master’s and Ph.D. in anthropology at the Graduate Faculty of the New  School University. Ani served as an SNCC (Student Non-Violent  Coordinating Committee) field secretary during Freedom Summer in 1964.  And she also taught as a professor of African Studies in the Department  of Black and Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College in New York City.
