Join this books discussion between author Dawit Muluneh and scholar Kamau Grimes. This book discusses the history of Ethiopia through the metaphorical lens of the love that exists between a husband and a wife. The book takes the positive aspects of the history (a period wherein this African nation was compared to Rome!) as well as the grimmer periods (wherein the people were fighting against each other). The book concludes by discussing how Ethiopia’s history was stolen by colonizers who entered the land in the 1920’s and 30’s. The last point is perhaps the most alarming since the ramifications are still present to this day.
Deacon Dawit Muluneh is the author of Hopeless Romantic: The Untold History of Ethiopia and I Need Answers. He grew up in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and at age seven, his family immigrated to the US from Ethiopia.
Muluneh graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon completing his education at Virginia Tech, he worked at a patent and trademark office for three years. At age 27, having sold his house and car he traveled to a monastery in Ethiopia - Däbre Libanos - to learn the traditional teachings of the church. Afterward, he was ordained as a deacon in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
