About The Event
When Malcolm Smiled is a short film that reimagines Malcolm X’s transformative visit to Ghana in May 1964. Blending historical fact with poetic reimagination, the film explores his iconic style, the vibrant beauty of Ghana, and the emotional and spiritual healing often felt by descendants of
the African diaspora who return to their ancestral home. During his time in Accra, which is highlighted in the film, Malcolm connected with literary luminaries Maya Angelou and Shirley DuBois, wife of Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, both of whom were living and working in Ghana. They welcomed him with an intimate dinner, introducing him to a thriving community of Ghanaian and Black American intellectuals and artists. His meeting with President Kwame Nkrumah, which he later described as “the highest honor of my life,” marked a powerful moment in his global awakening.
