THE GRAVEDIGGER’S WIFE (2021)

Guled is a gravedigger in Djibouti, waiting outside a hospital each day for the next body to bury. When his beloved wife Nasra falls gravely ill with kidney disease, he must find the equivalent of a year’s wages in far less time to pay for her surgery, setting him on a journey that tests everything he has. Khadar Ayderus Ahmed’s debut feature premiered at Cannes Critics’ Week in 2021, won the Amplify Voices Award at TIFF, and was Somalia’s first ever submission to the Academy Awards. Both films are in Somali with English subtitles.
