About The Event
Ngugi wa Thion'go: The River Between Languages explores Ngũgĩ’s life and intellectual journey through the politics of language, the relationship between indigenous and colonial languages, writing and activism, and the experience of writers in exile. It also draws on his biography and decades of engagement with African literature and political thought.
The documentary features conversations with a number of prominent scholars, writers, and intellectuals, including Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Simon Gikandi, Wole Soyinka, Angela Davis, and Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o himself, among others. Together, their reflections situate Ngũgĩ’s work within broader debates about language, literature, colonialism, exile, and Africa’s intellectual traditions.
