About The Event
Black Space: A Sankofa Music Series is an experience that relates sound to space. Blackness names a relation to the social world, but it can also name a relation people forge with each other, and to the space we make for ourselves. Music is perhaps the most meaningful way we offer to ourselves messages for how to live through this relation. This series evokes the sounds that might emanate in spaces dedicated to this question. It asks us what we hear when we listen for each other, for Black life, in Black space.
The DC Listening Group was founded over 30 years ago by physicians who loved listening to Black Classical Music or Great Black Music or its more common name of jazz. The group has diversified over the years. Currently, physicians, lawyers, academics, professionals, musicians, poets, and social activists, among others, constitute the group.
Members range in age from their early twenties to their late nineties. There were/are members in the group who have seen and personally known many of the giants of the music from Charlie Parker, Miles Davis. John Coltrane, to Sun Ra, and David Murray.
The group’s mission is to preserve, enhance, and past on the Music to future generations.
