The Dialectic Is in the Sea: The Black Radical Thought of Beatriz Nascimento

This book explores the academic and activist work of Beatriz Nascimento, a pioneering Afro-Brazilian historian and intellectual whose research centered on Black identity, spatial justice, and the legacy of quilombos, communities formed by formerly enslaved people in Brazil. Her work is recognized for its interdisciplinary rigor, bridging history, sociology, and Black feminist thought. 

Nascimento reinterprets the quilombo as a living symbol of contemporary Black resistance, seeing its spirit reflected in the favelas of Brazil and in global movements for Black liberation. Her writings call for the collective self-determination of Black people and explore the vital role of aesthetics, community, and spirituality in liberation struggles. 

She famously wrote: 

“The quilombo of Rio de Janeiro is a favela, a manifestation of Black dance – the Black Rio, a Central train, a new school of the suburbs.…
