José Martí had a great talent for writing and excelled in many forms of writing. He was a journalist, poet, essayist, playwright, and even wrote a novel, but what he devoted his talent and energy to most was, without a doubt, the cause of Cuban liberation. His pen never ceased to capture on paper his liberating thoughts, his ideal of a free Cuba governed by the Cuban people, and he urged his compatriots to never lose courage or hope. He didn't ask them to hate Spain, but rather the oppression they had suffered under it, and, above all, to hate their own lack of character, which, ultimately, was the only impediment to recovering what was theirs: their freedom and their identity as a people. This book collects the works that Martí wrote for this purpose from 1887 to 1892.
