Sunday Movie Nites 6pm at Sankofa - Music is the Weapon

Fela
Music is the Weapon
Music is the Weapon 6pm Sunday 12/20/09
Fela Kuti, a controversial figure throughout his life, is described as both "superstar" and "man of the people." This short, but potent document ably explores that dichotomy.

Filmed in 1982, the 53-minute documentary captures the late Nigerian musician/activist at his peak. (There are slight differences between the English and French versions, so it's best to watch both.) For the uninitiated, it's hard to explain--in mere words--how one man could so successfully mate the sexuality of James Brown with the righteous politics of Bob Marley and sinuous sounds of Miles Davis. Fela drew as much inspiration for his "Afro-beat" from Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X as funk, reggae, and jazz. Music Is the Weapon features interviews with Fela and a few of his many wives, along with performances of "ITT," "Army Arrangement," and other anthems.

Sankofa Sunday Nites

6pm Sunday Dec. 13, inside Sankofa Bookstore
sankara

Movie title:
Thomas Sankara: An Upright Man

As Africa looks desperately for leaders of integrity and vision, the life and ideals of the late Thomas Sankara seem more and more relevant and exemplary with the passage of time. This new film should go a long way towards explaining why, though largely forgotten in this country, Sankara is still venerated on his own continent as the 'African Che,' a legendary martyr like Patrice Lumumba or Amilcar Cabral. The film recovers for the present a detailed history of Sankara's brief four-year rule and his revolutionary program for African self-reliance as a defiant alternative to the neo-liberal development strategies imposed on Africa by the West, both then and today.

in which children can follow the creative process of an artist. Ms. Moja,
who should be called "the Alice Coltrane" of fashion, inserts her own untethered imagination into the realm of wearable art. After all of her designing, sewing, and hard work, her clothes make the people who wear them an integrated part of a larger artistic composition!

Africa,
My Beloved : A Liberation Plan For a Free & Sovereign Continent

by Remigius Kintu

AFRICA, MY BELOVED

This 387 page book deplores the current state of affairs in Africa; it examines its economic, political, security, social, cultural and population problems. It reveals how foreign economic exploitation, also known as neo-colonialism, is at the core of most of these problems. Foreign corporations and their supporting agencies continue to perpetuate the old concept of Africa being a mere source of raw materials for overseas industrialized economies, forcing Africans to be consumers of manufactured goods from abroad. They will not help to uplift the continent from its miserable conditions to a descent and prosperous status.

 A film by Tahani Rached

Screened to audiences at the Cannes, Toronto, and New York film festivals, this fresh, irresistibly lively, intensely engaging documentary from widely acclaimed Egyptian director Tahani Rached (SORAΟDA, WOMAN OF PALESTINE and FOUR WOMEN OF EGYPT) follows a band of teenage girls living on the streets of Cairo. Rached won astonishing access to the girls' world; this vigorous, cinematic film is built upon the deep trust of its subjects and the long experience of the filmmaker. Already at a disadvantage as impoverished and abused girls in a Muslim society, they encounter rape, drug addiction, prostitution, pregnancy and motherhood on the streets. While the girls' troubles are not downplayed, neither are their courage, playfulness and vibrant camaraderie.

Rached brings alive the pulse of Cairo's streets, offering an unsentimental portrait that avoids traps of guilt or cheap pity. What stands out is the strength and sheer joy that these girls project. With deft skill Rached reveals an invisible world and offers a loving homage to the inspirational, fierce girls who inhabit it.

Herbalists have the great opportunity to be a voice here, and we were a big voice in changing the face of American health care, you know by introducing alternatives again.  We made a lot of noise about the very grass roots, organic way, and we have the same responsibility to now that we have restored herbalism in this culture, we have maybe a greater responsibility to ensure that those plants have the tradition that it's based on. We say it is for future generations of plant lovers but truthfully it is for the great web of life, it really has a little to do with people more to do with the web of life.

Tokunboh has founded Nourishing Botanicals to serve her purpose and long-time calling. And she states "Nourishing Botanicals came together as my long time pursuit to fulfilling my calling.  At this point I have arrived to a place where I am able to reach out to the community and share the gifts bestowed to me.  I pride myself as an earth mother, embracer of nature and natural things, authentic in thought and action, creative, intuitive and honest.  I fill myself with the bounties of the earth and the simple things many take for granted.  This is how the term Nourishing Botanicals came about.  It means botany feeds the mind, body and spirit.Check her site for further information

Birth of Nation
The Black Psychology Eye on Film Series will kick off this saturday March 21st 11am at Sankofa. We will begin with the first feature film in this country- Birth of a Nation. The purpose of starting with the racist film "Birth of a Nation" is to show how film was used by white film makers to inspire violence against black people. The timing of the film is important because it was produced after the period known as Reconstruction where African people were allowed to participate in government after the Emancipation Proclamation.

The racist film, Birth of a Nation, reproduced and projected the negative stereotypes of African people onto the screen for the first time and captured the in a way never done before. If seeing is believing, and perception is the basis of reality, then there are psychological aspects to be understood from this film, especially as it relates to the historical moment of reconstruction shortly followed by what Rayford Logan would call the low point in American history, the Nadir. During the Nadir, there were scores of white racist mob attacks of black communities that were sanctioned by the state in many cases. The reascension of the Ku Klux Klan and the lynching of Africans in America occurred during this period called the Nadir and lasts through today in modern forms.
